11 Quick Banner Design Tips

by Jeff Lee

  • The bigger the area of the banner the better. Banners that are 468 pixels wide are more likely to be clicked on then ones which are only 100 pixels.

  • Keep the banner file size small. If it's too big, visitors will click away from the web site before the banner even gets a chance to finish loading.

  • Make the background of the banner stand out. Use neon colors or a background image. Viewers are more likely to notice your banner and consequently are more likely to click on it.

  • Sex and intrigue sell.

  • Use power words such as FREE or MONEY. There is nothing people love more than something which is free.

  • Make sure that your banner offers the viewer some sort of benefit, otherwise they will not click.

  • Make the banner eye-catchy. Use animation.

  • Involve your audience. Make the banner interactive.

  • Call to action. Make sure the audience knows that the banner is something to be click on. Tell them to "Click Here!"

  • Create a sense of urgency. Tell your audience that "Time is running out!" or "Last chance."

  • Track your banners. Know which ones are succeeding, and modify the ones that aren't.
